How Streaming Audio works...
Imagine pumping water from a well into a jug, "downloading" five ounces of water per second through a funnel that drains at only three ounces per second. The funnel begins to fill up, while the water streams into the jug at a constant rate.
Similarily, these Streaming Audio files DOWNLOAD at up to 5.5 kbps, but STREAM at a slower 3.5 kbps. This creates an electronic 'funnel' or reservoir of audio bytes waiting to be delivered.

The purple slider is the jug, the yellow marker the funnel. The incoming audio file downloads into the 'funnel' just a little bit faster than it plays, staying just a few steps ahead of the audio you're actually hearing.
